چکیده
The Department of Information Science is one of six departments that make up the Division of Commerce at the University of Otago. The department offers courses of study leading to a major in Information Science within the BCom, BA and BSc degrees. In addition to undergraduate teaching, the department is also strongly involved in postgraduate research programmes leading to MCom, MA, MSc and PhD degrees. Research projects in software engineering and software development, information engineering and database, software metrics, knowledge-based systems, natural language processing, spatial information systems, and information systems security are particularly well supported. One problem that can arise is that there may be many differing viewpoints among the various groups that are involved in a project. Each of these viewpoints describes a perspective on the phenomenon being modelled. In this paper, we focus on the representation of developer viewpoints, and in particular on how multiple viewpoint representations may be used for database design. We examine the issues that arise when transforming between different viewpoint representations, and describe an architecture for implementing a database design environment based on these concepts.

Image Quality in Image-Based Representations of Real-World Environments - Perceived Smoothness of Viewpoint Transitions
In this study, we investigated the effect of viewpoint density and speed of motion on perceived smoothness of viewpoint transitions. The effect of viewpoint density was examined for two types of viewer motion: forward and lateral motion. In both cases, we found that perceived smoothness varies with viewpoint density. We also found the number of viewpoints required to maintain a certain level of...
متن کاملPresence, Place and the Virtual Spectacle
This paper considers the concept of presence in virtual environments with respect to a Situationist critique of spectacularised urban space. The aim is to explore the concepts of space and place that have become bound up with presence research from an alternative critical viewpoint. The adopted Situationist perspective distinguishes between representations of places and inhabitable spaces, high...
متن کاملThe hippocampal role in spatial memory and the familiarity--recollection distinction: a case study.
Memory for object locations and for events (comprising the receipt of an object) was tested in a case of developmental amnesia with focal hippocampal damage. Tests used virtual reality environments and forced-choice recognition with foils chosen to equalize the performance of control participants across conditions. Memory for the objects received was unimpaired, but the context of their receipt...
متن کاملTranslating descriptions of a viewpoint among different representations
An important part of the systems development process is building models of real-world phenomena. These phenomena are described by many different kinds of information, and this diversity has resulted in a wide variety of modelling representations. Different types of information are better expressed by some representations than others, so it is sensible to use multiple representations to describe...
متن کاملWorldlets: 3D Thumbnails for Wayfinding in Large Virtual Worlds
Finding one’s way to sites of interest on the Web can be problematic, and this difculty has been recently exacerbated by widespread development of 3-D Web content and virtual-world browser technology using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). Whereas travelers can often navigate 2-D Web sites based on textual and 2-D thumbnail image representations of the sites’ content, nding one’s ...
متن کاملViewpoint-Invariant Representation of Generalized Cylinders Using the Symmetry Set
We demonstrate that viewpoint-invariant representations can be obtained from images for a useful class of 3D smooth object. The representations are stable over viewpoint, and also discriminate between different objects in the same class. They are computed using only image information, from the symmetry set of the object's outline. Examples are given of the representations obtained from real per...
